Obama accepts Nobel Peace Prize: “War is necessary to achieve peace”

Obama said in Oslo that people should accept the “hard truth” that “violence can not be eradicated and that sometimes it is necessary for countries to go to war to protect its citizens.”

He acknowledged that previous recipients had been “far more deserving of this honor than I,” defended Afghanistan as a “just war” and claimed “the instruments of war do have a role to play in preserving the peace.” He advocated for, as ways of sustaining peace, “alternatives to violence that are tough enough to change behavior,” finding it “incumbent upon all of us to insist that nations like Iran and North Korea do not game the system”; promotion of civil rights, aspiration to which he called “universal” and for which “America will always be a voice”; and “investments in development” to end world hunger.

“We can understand that there will be war, and still strive for peace,” Obama said. “We can do that, for that is the story of human progress; that is the hope of all the world; and at this moment of challenge, that must be our work here on Earth.”

Obama expressed “deep gratitude and great humility” for the Nobel Peace Prize, which “speaks to out highest aspirations … For all the cruelty and hardship of our world, we are not mere prisoners of fate. Our actions matter, and can bend history in the direction of justice.”

The award comes just days after the president announced a military build-up in Afghanistan, a surge of 30,000 U.S. troops.

Mario, you have the clue.. it is simple to show somebody as enemy, as terorist, but not to go into depth and ask why those "enemies" were created? why they disagree? and what force people to act in such unhumanic manner as teoror.. as usually it is used as a last resort to be heard.

I think before you speak, discuss the different problems that afflict the world, we must try to understand the root, and thus the nature of all problems (war, hunger, water, oil, terrorism, etc.).. We must be aware that whoever controls the world, our lives are the banks, especially the World Bank and the FEDERAL RESERVE.Only when we found the solution to dismantle these MAFIAS that could go towards solving the problems. OR NO?

O NO?

someone said so many centuries ago: "Si vis pacem para bellum". The translation is "if you want peace, prepare war first". But that empire finished by other warriors that came from north...So the history is cycling...Be careful Mr.Obama...your Lobby empire could fall like roman one...

Thank you Alessandro for starting this interesting discussion and for all of you making valuable contribution. I agree with you, War for Peace - is not the way. Isn't UN created for that?! But those ones who created it (US), use it for transmitting their own message and showing "good" and "bad" guys. Peace can not be brought by war. It only will engage further wars and other generations to seek for revanche - isn't Middle East about that?! I think PEACE can be built only by JUSTICE, but unfortunatly while establishing warmachines, armies, and so on, REAL international court hasn't been created - this could be an option. PEACE, human rights and other I guess "too idealistic stuff" for Obama is left basicly for various NGO's which don't have any formal ways to work in these situations. They let us play Human Right advocates, with little actions in street, or workshops at school, but when the violations is done, there is so hard to apply for any institution.. especially when it is done not for one person but for whole social group, society, country... I've got in some situations.. but when discrimination is done by the government - it is really hopless to do anything else, but keep doing these little actions and hope to be heard. Let's come back to the Obama case, And do we hear in this situation Afganistan arguments? Has Obama asked and tried to solve this in a peaceful way? (they have money - and this can solve some conflicts as well..) So for the end, funny comparison - what's the difference between Obama and Osama?

Ciao
